 Hotel Gansevoort
Owned by Henry Kallan, who runs New York's Library Hotel and Prague's Aria Hotel, among others, this 14-story silver-colored building is all luxury on the inside, from the moment you step into the club-like lobby 'til you tuck yourself into the comfier-than-usual beds. The rooms are equipped with the latest amenities: flat screen TVs, high-speed Internet access, 400-thread Egyptian cotton linens and cordless phones. Sweetening the pot are bay windows or Juliet balconies in nearly all the rooms, and closet and bathroom doors that boast cool backlighting.

The rooftop features a 45-foot heated outdoor, glass-surrounded, swimming pool with underwater music, the first of its kind in Manhattan. 360 degree city and river views

 Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park
An extreme makeover completed in 2002 transformed the former St. Moritz Hotel overlooking the southern end of Central Park into one of the city's most appealing luxury hotels, with 261 impeccably outfitted rooms and suites housed inside the 33-story landmark building. No tennis facilities are available on-site, but the Central Park Tennis Center is about 2 miles uptown, or you can head over to Second Avenue and ride the aerial tramway to the indoor courts of the Roosevelt Island Racquet Club. Rates at this premium property typically exceed $500 a night, with significantly higher price tags during periods of high demand and for rooms with a view of the park.

Some travelers complain that the guest rooms at this vintage Madison Avenue property are too small and lacking in modern fixtures, while others adore the hotel's authentic early-20th-century architecture and Old World style. If you think you might fall in the latter category, the Wales can serve as a good base for exploring New York's Museum Mile, and it's an easy walk to the seasonal outdoor courts at the Central Park Tennis Center. Rates for the 46 rooms and 41 suites begin at around $250 a night, including continental breakfast in the hotel's atmospheric Pied Piper Room.

Travelers staying at this large business hotel next to Grand Central Station have easy access to the two indoor courts of the Tennis Club at Grand Central, or they can hop on the No. 7 Flushing subway line to Tennisport in Long Island City or the USTA National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows. Accommodations at the modern 1,311-room property are spacious and comfortable, if not particularly charming, and you couldn't ask for a more convenient Midtown location. Double rates generally average around $300 to $400, though off-peak discounts are sometimes available for under $200 a night.

The business-oriented Affinia Dumont at 34th and Lexington bills itself as New York's only "executive fitness suite hotel," offering guests an unusually well-equipped workout space and day spa, a library of health and fitness books, and customized in-room exercise kits on demand. There's even a dedicated "fitness concierge" who advises guests on sports and fitness activities (including tennis) both in the hotel and around town. The 248 studios and one- and two-bedroom suites are outfitted for the needs of business travelers, but the spacious accommodations with kitchenettes also work well for families. Rates generally average around $300 to $400 a night, though it's sometimes possible to get a studio for around $200 a night on weekends.
